HOW AND WHEN TO CHOOSE A U-SHAPED KITCHEN

How and when to choose a U-shaped kitchen

It has a lot of names – U-shaped kitchen, “horseshoe” kitchen, gulf kitchen – and a great (but not the only) merit: that of perhaps being the most functional kitchen model of all.
In the U-shaped kitchen, space is organised ergonomically along three walls using highly efficient criteria so that movements between one worktop and another are reduced to a minimum.
Does a kitchen with everything within easy reach appeal to you? A Gulf kitchen may be the one for you, as long as the environment meets a number of basic requirements.

When and how to choose this model

1. If you want to move around the kitchen “with your eyes closed”

2. If you have plenty of space available

3. If you like the idea of a kitchen structured into “zones”

1. The U-shaped kitchen is ideal if you want to move around the kitchen “with your eyes closed”

A U-shaped kitchen or Horseshoe kitchen is the perfect solution if you want work space designed for ease and functionality of movement.
It is spread over three sides, usually two walls of similar length and a shorter “bridge wall” positioned between the two, which allows the various kitchen areas to be arranged tactically.
If kitchen areas are too far apart or poorly organised, you run the risk of having to run from the sink to the refrigerator, to the oven, to the hob, and cabinetry like a pinball in a pinball machine, wasting time and effort. U-shaped kitchens eliminate this inconvenience all together.

2. The U-shaped kitchen is ideal if you have plenty of space available

A U-shaped kitchen offers great versatility but it needs a suitable size, i.e. a width that allows for easy passage and the doors and drawers to be conveniently opened on both sides.
In practical terms, this means that at the centre of the arrangement – so between the two fronts – there must be a space of at least 160 centimetres (200 would be better).
This does not mean that the room has to be structured specifically for this arrangement: as a variation of the corner kitchen, the horseshoe kitchen is so versatile that it can even be planned in a corner of open-plan spaces.

3. The U-shaped kitchen is ideal if you like the idea of a kitchen structered into “zones”

Have you ever thought about configuring your “work triangle”? A gulf kitchen makes this visible and operational by placing the three functions of the kitchen on the three different sides: the cooking area, the larder area and the sink area. An additional solution is to integrate one side with a counter that serves as a table, perhaps placing it at a lower height than the other worktops.
